Markus studied chemistry at RWTH Aachen University and Philipps-University Marburg. For his PhD, he joined the group of Prof. Stephan Sieber at Technical University of Munich and became intrigued by the power of chemistry to unravel biological questions. During his postdoctoral work in the lab of Prof. Matthew Bogyo at Stanford University, he developed and applied new tools to identify and characterize proteases produced by commensal bacteria.
Markus now is a Junior Group leader at Friedrich-Schiller University Jena. He continues to be excited by the utility of chemical biology methods and is eager to unravel the molecular mechanisms of microbial interactions.
When not in lab (or the office), Markus enjoys being outdoors or trying out a new baking recipe.
