Tamara completed her Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts at Monash University, Australia followed by a Master in Biomedical Science at the University of Melbourne. Her Masters thesis focused on the impact of dimerisation, amino acid substitution, and assay buffer on the antimicrobial activity and toxicity of the bee venom peptide melittin.

Following graduation, she then worked as a research assistant at the University of Melbourne Dental School developing 2D and 3D oral mucosal models for assessing the invasion dynamics of N. gonorrhoeae and to screen potential drug candidates. This was followed by a short time at St Vincent’s Institute of Medical Research with the Cardiac Regeneration group, differentiating iPSCs into beating heart cells for research into Friedreich’s ataxia and diabetes.

Her PhD project aims to elucidate the role of secreted proteins from the gut microbiota and how they impact microbial communications.
